I love this time of year, everyone is upbeat, the scoreboard has been reset and the glimmer of hope and perseverance gleans over everyone. The question is, how do we keep that feeling, that momentum throughout the year? Below are three of my ideas that might assist in that effort:

1. Let the team know it’s OK to fail
It is our job as leaders to create the type of environment that fosters failure. Within these failures are valuable lessons that will help an individual grow, as well as the team. Typically, we don’t talk about the losses or inspect how we could have been better. Therefore, we make the same mistakes over and over again. With an open environment to learn from failures, we can start to talk about them with our teams and grow from them in the future.

2. Create a culture of growth
With failure comes the opportunity to grow our teams through coaching. Leaders need to create a process in which they coach their teams. This process should be the same each and every time and should be shared with the team as expectations of their development. These coaching sessions should be scheduled routinely and have the same agenda each and every time.

3. Make Accountability a Priority
Accountability doesn’t have to be a dirty word, but so many organizations run from it. What happens at your home when the trash company misses your house, or the internet goes out? You more than likely call and let them know, and the company dispatches a truck to pick up your rubbish or fix your internet. You see, everyone wants accountability when they are not the ones being held accountable. The truth is that people respect accountability and structure. We grew up with it, we crave it once it has been given to us, and it is necessary in order to achieve our goals.

You can use my three suggestions or create your own. Whatever you choose, I encourage you to get outside of your comfort zone and make productivity a focus for yourself and your team in 2020.

As always,

Keep Growing!
