As we are sliding into 2020, shaking the holiday dust off and we begin focusing back on our teams and our businesses, I challenge you. I challenge you to pick three areas of your business that if were fixed, could change the game for you, your team, and your company. What are those areas?

In my travels I have met and talked with many leaders that have good businesses, but they won’t ever be great, because they are missing key ingredients to making a winning culture.

1. They don’t drive accountability:
Accountability doesn’t have to be a dirty word and quite frankly, individually we want accountability in our lives. When the trash doesn’t get picked up, who do we call? When our internet or power goes out, don’t we call the company that is accountable to providing us that service? So why in the world in any business do we let ourselves and our people not remain accountable to the tasks, targets and goals that they have set forth to hit? Perhaps, it’s because we don’t want to deal with conflict, or maybe we didn’t do a good job at managing expectations. Whatever the reason may be, there is no excuse for us not to hold ourselves and our people to a higher standard of accountability.

2. They don’t communicate well:
Are you a good listener? How often do you find yourself thinking or even worse looking at a message on your phone when you are with one of your employees? What do you suppose is going through your employee’s mind in that moment?
Our communication is made up of much more than just words, it’s our tone and most importantly our body language that speaks the most. Often times people are unaware that their body language is sending mixed messages that negatively impact their communication with others.

3. They fear change:
I’ve always loved the saying, “we’ve always done it that way here.” Just because you’ve always done it that way in the past, doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s the best way now. I understand people are uncomfortable with change, but in this day and age if you aren’t innovating, cultivating or driving change, your competition is, and they will win. Defining a structure in your organization that enables you to embrace change with the ability to refine and improve upon your organizations processes will foster growth and lead to happier teams that are up for any challenge!

So…what three areas will you choose to focus on improving in your business this year? Write them down, share them, and be held accountable to making the changes you need to succeed.

As always,

Keep Growing!
